SALINA

Salina is the green pearl of the Aeolian Islands, strategically located in the hearth of the archipelago with forests on the top and blue sea all around: ideal for nature lovers!

  • On the peak of the Aeolian Islands

 

With his 962 meters Monte Fossa delle Felci is the peak of the Aeolian islands; we start the way up along the easy unpaved road where we admire the incredible changing colors of the flowers and of the volcanic stone; arriving on the top we can see an astonish view of all the archipelago. After walking in the middle of the old crater under the shadow of centenary chestnut trees we start going down back to the church.

  • Following the olive´s way.

 

Beautiful and panoramic walk suitable for everybody: we start from the village of Leni, following an ancient dry-walls path, then we reach Valle Spina passing through an olive trees bush in the south-west part of the island; here we reach a view point overlooking Filo di Branda, in this area it’s possible to see the queen’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) and other predaceous birds with Alicudi and Filicudi on the horizon…

  • To the top from Lingua

 

 

Surely one of the most demanding and impervious way up to the top, the path starts immediately steep and bumpy passing through few panoramic houses, the ground is friable and slippery until the cut-fire line; here there is a little flat part of the path opening on a nice view of the south-east part of Salina. We enter the meridional part of the rim of the Fossa and in few minutes we reach the long-awaited summit. After walking in the middle of the old crater under the shadow of centenary chestnut trees we start going down back following different trails.

  • The footsteps of the Saracens.

 

Interesting and not too much demanding excursion that starts from Santa Marina: walking through a steep path carved among multicolor lava flows we reach the Saracen caves, once used as shelters to escape the pirate aggressions, for those reasons they were built in the soft rock and hidden from the vegetation…

  • Mediterranean waliking

 

Nice, easy and interesting path: we start from the village of Lingua following an ancient dry-walls trail, we reach Genovesi place from where we start the smooth way up to Paolonoci in the south-east part of Salina, here we reach a traditional aeolian country house with a great view on Lipari, Vulcano and Sicily. On the pleasant downhill we walk across mediterranean bush till we reach the lake…

  • Walking in the woods.

 

 

One of the most panoramic hike of Salina: the path starts in Malfa and attacks the northern side of the mount, the vegetation is immediately thick and luxuriant and covers one of the less explored area of the island. The strong smell of woods accompanies to the road that connect the cut-fire line and the ancient crater of Serro Capo, panoramic point from where is possible to see all the archipelago and Sicily. The descend follows a steep path carved into the tuff until Santa Marina.

  • The west of Salina

 

Among the most impressive hike of the Aeolian Archipelago: we start from the village of Leni, following an ancient dry-walls path, then we reach Valle Spina passing through an olive grove in the south-west part of the island; here we climb in the direction of Pizzo Corvo in this area it’s possible to see the queen’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) and other predaceous birds. The way down follows a path with a fantastic view on the ancient crater in which lays the town of Pollara.

  • Il Monte dei Porri

 

The second mount of Salina, less known and surprisingly a lot different from the Fossa delle Felci! An unusual excursion along a sandy trail on the eastern part of the mount. Vegetation is low and thermophile and accompanies following narrow and hairpin bends up to the top of the small crater; the sight turns all around without trees covering the view. The descend is on the north-west side with a more luxuriant nature and spectacular outlooks on Pollara and the sea.
